Ron Kisner, the owner of New World Publishing started his company for one main reason - to keep more money in the pockets of the author! Being an author himself, Ron learned quickly that everyone was making money from his work, except him!
The publisher, after publishing his book would list the book on their company on-line bookstore. Even though they set the retail price at $14.95 they discounted it on their bookstore site for $11.95. When the book sold, Ron made a profit of 8% (or .95 cents per book).
If the book was sold through a bookstore, the bookstore took 40-45% of the retail after the publisher took their share. Anyway you figure it, they made much more money from the sale of his books than he did! Some companies even charged up to 55% of the retail to sell the book! This is absolutely rediculous!
Ron started thinking of how to offer new authors the chance to be published and make the majority of the profits go into their pockets. He finally came up with an idea of starting the authors in their own business since being a published author is a business.
First of all he decided that working one-on-one with the author would produce a better book since they would correspond directly with each other. To many companies today the author is nothing more than a number and it is very hard to have actual contact with them through the production period. Ron works directly with the authors and lets the author okay every phase of the process. He sends page proofs to the author, no matter how many times it takes to make sure the interior of the book is exactly as the author wants it to be.
Although most companies reserve the right to design the cover, Ron, again works with the author to bring about a beautiful, eye-catching cover that meets the approval of the author.
Next, Ron had to figure out how to make it affordable for the first time author. Since he is a small independant publisher, he pays all costs up front for Art, ISBN's, Barcoding and Pricing, Printing and so forth, so it is necessary for him to charge a fee. He thought about this for awhile and came up with the plan to send the author 100 copies of the book right from the start. Most authors require 100 copies of their book at the start just to sell to friends, neighbors, family and associates, so Ron figured if he gave the author the first 100 copies, they would make every penny of their fee back immediately and end up being published for free. After this, the author just orders the books he needs at a very good authors discount. Doing it this way the author's now make between $4-$7.00 per copy, and have fun doing it. He still makes the books available to all bookstores but author generated sales puts much more money in the author's pocket.
Ron retains a very good relationship with his authors. Since working directly with them they get to be very good friends. Many even come to visit. So please remember that Ron, being a published author himself, thinks of the authors needs first!
It is a hard fact that every author will pay for publishing their book one way or the other. Either someone will publish your book for free and they will make all the money, or you will pay a fee and make most of the money for yourself, and that is the way it should be.
